Tractive System Status Indicator

Altium · UofT Formula Racing

Built for University of Toronto Formula Racing's 2026 electric car. It monitors the electrical and driverless systems and visually flags faults to the team.

What it is:

This was the first PCB I ever designed! I designed it for the University of Toronto Formula Racing team. It uses LEDs to signal whether the car is safe to touch, energized, or experiencing an isolation fault. It is required for competition and is a very important board. Looking back, I am incredibly happy to have been able to design it in my first year of university.

How it works:

The TSSI works by checking the Grounded Low Voltage (GLV) system, the Battery Management System (BMS) and the Insulation Monitoring Device (IMD) to decide which lighting sequence to show.

What I learned:

  • I learned how to use Altium, including importing component models.
  • I learned a lot about diodes, since they weren't covered in my first-year classes.

What's next:

Hopefully the team keeps using it for many more years :)
